Set in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Tahoe's resorts, known as the birthplace of extreme skiing, feature deep powder dumps, sunny days and incredible views.
Apart from soaking in that incredible view, there’s another popular pastime up here on the ridge: feeding the birds for which it is named. Check out Chickadee Ridge on social media and you’ll see Snow White moments featuring a wide-eyed hikers, surrounded by trees and snow, with small grey, black and white birds eating seed from their hands. After having respect for wildlife drilled into me since childhood, I resist the temptation to capture a similar memory.
This snowshoe hike in the wilderness – relatively flat and not even six kilometres long – is just one of the many winter adventures you can have in Tahoe North. Try cross-country skiing or snow tubing, finesse your style on board or skis across 11 resorts, and find a guide to hit the backcountry.
If you like variety (and who doesn’t), check out Tahoe North. It has the largest concentration of ski resorts in North America, with 11 resorts and their matching villages.
If you’re looking to get high, the divinely named Heavenly, at a squidge over 3,000 metres, has more altitude than any other ski resort around Lake Tahoe. And it’s one that appeals to those looking to up their skill level. There’s almost 2,000 hectares of skiable terrain, with plenty of tree runs, some challenging chutes and drops in Killebrew Canyon, and a range of parks, including one with a halfpipe. It’s got a prime possie on the mountain, too, so the views of the lake are spectacular. When you’re done, the famous party at Tamarack Lodge gets the après off to a good start every afternoon.
Palisades Tahoe is often voted one of the USA’s best ski resorts, and it’s easy to see why. As well as empty back bowls and 1,500 hectares of skiable terrain, there’s Olympic heritage to discover (Palisades Tahoe hosted the 1960 Winter Games and you can learn about at the Olympic Museum in the village). Even beginners can get in on the action high up on the mountain by taking the Aerial Tram to the top where there are slopes, with a view of Lake Tahoe, suitable for newbies.
You won’t believe Diamond Peak, a community-owned resort with incredible views of the lake, located just above Incline Village. Need a break from the mountain? Tahoe Sleigh Rides takes you along snow-covered beaches in a horse-drawn sleigh. If you stay at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, there’s a shuttle between the hotel and the slopes every 30 minutes. There’s also the option of boutique luxury properties, such as The Incline Lodge. You can even resort hop between Diamond Peak and the divinely named Heavenly Ski Resort.
Those looking for an outstanding high should consider Mt Rose-Ski Tahoe Ski Resort. Starting at 2,600 metres, it’s Tahoe’s highest base. From there, you can launch yourself into the Sierra Nevada ranges best powder. The resort is perched on the edge of Slide Bowl, with amazing views of the surrounding mountains and the Nevada desert below, but its big attraction is the Chutes, with some of the longest vertical runs in the country.
Northstar is another favourite with a hundred trails, 1,300 skiable hectares and some of the best terrain parks in North America. And if you’re looking for ski-in/ski-out, the Village at Northstar is the place to be. It’s a more intimate affair, albeit one with the super-luxurious Ritz-Carlton. Right in the middle of the village there’s also an ice rink.

Mt Rose is the closest resort to the Reno/Tahoe International Airport, but take the opportunity to build a great American road trip into your next ski holiday. Hire a car after landing in Los Angeles and head through the Mojave Desert to Las Vegas for a night or two of bright lights and fun times. From there it’s a straight eight-hour route to Lake Tahoe, but take your time and explore Death Valley or the Extraterrestrial Highway. There’s also the Free-Range Art Highway that stretches from Vegas to Reno, where you can stop at the Goldwell Open Air Museum, visit a forest of junked cars, and stay at the haunted Clown Motel.
