It doesn’t matter which adventure activity you choose or exactly where you’re undertaking it, one of the biggest safety rules is letting people know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Wouldn’t it be better if, as well as that, they could keep track of exactly where you are as well?
Enter the location-sharing app Life360. While it might be used mainly by parents keeping track of wayward teens, it’s also incredibly helpful for anyone who’s into mountain adventures in remote locations.
Whether you’re going hiking in the Kosciuszko National Parkor are planning a backcountry ski trip in Japan, make sure your phone is fully charged then add the right people – your family, the friends you’re travelling with – to your circle. Through the app they can see where you are, whether they’re walking ahead of you on the trail or you’ve lost one another in a sea of colourful gear on a white mountain. Life360 allows you to quickly regroup and head off on another run. The folks at home can even follow what you’re up to if they ever worry about your safety. (Hello, Mum!)
There are other features that make it a great adventure travel companion. If you’ve decided to head back to the lodge or camp, send an alert to your companions so they don’t waste time looking for you. And, if something seemly does happen, you can hit the SOS alert – it gets sent to your circle as well as your emergency contacts and the proper authorities.
Life360 also has an alert telling you if someone in your group’s battery is running low, so you’ve got plenty of time to organise a meet-up before their phone carks it.
There are various plans available, starting from the basic free plan right up to one that costs $25 a month, which gives you unlimited place alerts, crash detection for when things go really arse up on the mountain, disaster response and 24/7 roadside assistance for when your car breaks down on your way to the next adventure.
You can also team Life360 with Tiles (either the original versions or the newer sticker types) in case you want to track your luggage and other expensive gear.
